Swindon for Europe’s street team have been hitting Wood Street again (in Old Town, Swindon), campaigning to raise awareness on the government’s lack of action around the report on Russian interference in the EU referendum, more generally in British politics.
This isn’t just about Europe, it’s about what sort of democracy we want to live in. I think most of us want to live in a democracy where our elected representatives are acting on our behalf, for our betterment, as a result of being put their by our decisions. Any credible interference in that should be investigated, and that investigation acted on so that it can be shut-down. The fact that the government has failed to take serious steps to safeguard our democracy either speaks of negligence, or perhaps more likely apathy towards a status-quo that benefits them.
Looking into how Russia interference might have influenced the EU referendum cannot undo Brexit – it has already happened. But it could strengthen our democracy and make sure that it is the British people who are the ones pulling the strings of the UK Government.
