Swindon for Europe

Swindon for Europe

We are a cross-party, grassroots campaign group whose aim is to stop the worst effects of Brexit, to promote European-values and to encourage cultural exchange in Swindon. In the longer term, we would like to help new-Europeanism to flourish in Swindon and for us to work towards a much closer relationship with our friends and allies on the continent.

We are passionate Europeans.  We believe that as a European nation, the UK should be at the heart of Europe, culturally, economically and politically. Our eventual aim is for the UK to retake its rightful place at the top table of the EU.  We must continue to work together with our European neighbours to secure peace and security in Europe and tackle borderless issues such as the environment.  We also believe the UK, and Swindon, in particular, has benefitted greatly from the exchange of trade, skills, knowledge and investment whilst in the EU.

Currently, we are primarily focused on:

  • Street protests and events to raise awareness of pro-European issues, such as the potential lowering of food standards in the trade deal with the USA
  • Letter writing to local MPs and Councillors to ensure Swindon has a plan for dealing with the worst outcomes of Brexit (if the transition ends without a deal having been struck)
  • Discussion of pro-European and anti-Brexit topics on our Facebook campaign page, and generally supporting our members through these turbulent times.

We’ve been on the streets of Swindon with a petition about how want to keep those high Europe standards protected our farmers, and our food, from any lowering to American standards in the trade deal.

People on the street of most political leanings agree with us.

Remainers are nothing like those who attacked the US Congress

January 11, 2021 By Swindon for Europe

A deeply misguided individual sent a letter into Swindon Advertiser comparing actions of Remains (who have always acted lawfully) with the actions of the seditious Trump supporters who violently attacked the US congress: https://www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/news/18994115.letters-democracy-means-accepting-vote-result/?fbclid=IwAR1IspL4CSIxVDle__egLy9DdwkG9PzIAM4ohwdQZQlmZy8l0ztDoCJ-b4M Swindon for Europe have composed an official response (see below), however many of our members were also outraged and sent letters …

Keeping in touch whilst standing on the sidelines

December 30, 2020 By Devizes for Europe

Brexit has always been an impossibility, but how it unfolds is unpredictable. We do not know how long it will take for the wider public to fully appreciate what they have lost. Nor do we know how the political landscape will unfold for the United Kingdom, but we can guess that it’s going to be …

No Erasmus from 2021 – Why!?

December 29, 2020 By Swindon for Europe

I read in a Guardian article (see link below) that the Govt have announced that we will not be sticking with Erasmus, an instead they will set up our own British scheme named after Alan Turing. Clearly, it would be great if they do set up a scheme to pay for British students to study …
